Population improvement of maize for drought tolerance

English. Eastern of Indonesia like NTT, NTB, Maluku Tenggara, and some areas in South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and Palu Valley of Central Sulawesi are dominated by dryland with dry climate. Some constraints to maize production in this area include low and erratic rainfall, weeds, and unfertile soils. Drought tolerance and high yield varieties are needed for this environment. Maize population improvement to increase yield potential under drought condition is one strategy to cope with the problems. In BALITJAS there are two populations being improved for drought tolerance, i.e. yellow maize Pool-2(FS)C7, C8 and white [Tuxpeno sequia C6] CO. The selection method is full sib, S1 and S2. For family evaluation we use drought index practiced in a simple lattice design experiment. The recent result showed that selected family of Pool-2(FS)C7 and C8 in drought condition gave mean yield 1.9 t/ha. After recombination of superior families we got mean yield of 4.8-5.2 t/ha, IK more than 1.0 and plant aspect 1-2. The white maize S1 families flowers at 42-49 days (anthesis), plant height 1.5-1.9 m and showed prolificacy

unknown. KTI (Kawasan Timur Indonesia) seperti di NTT, NTB, Maluku Tenggara, sebagian Sulsel, Sultra dan Lembah Palu Sulteng banyak didominasi oleh lahan kering beriklim kering. Kawasan ini dicirikan curah hujan rendah dan eratik, bergulma, dan kahat hara sehingga prodktivitas pangan termasuk jagung sangat rendah. Merakit varietas jagung yang tahan kering melalui perbaikan populasi merupakan upaya untuk dapat meningkatkan produktivitas hasil, ramah lingkungan dan tidak perlu sarana produksi tinggi. Di BALITJAS dirakit populasi jagung kuning Pool-2(S1) siklus C7, C8 dan jagung putih [Tuxpeno squia C6] CO untuk tahan kering. Perakitan varietas dengan metoda seleksi saudara kandung., S1 dan S2 kemudian dievaluasi dengan IK (Indeks Kering) dalam Rancangan Latis Sederhana. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa famili terseleksi Pool-2 pada lingkungan tercekam kering siklus C7 dan C8 diperoleh hasil 1,9 t/ha dan setelah direkombinasi 4,8-5,2 t/ha, IK lebih besar dari 1,0 serta aspek tanaman, tongkol dan kelobot 1-2, interval waktu penyerbukan sekitar tiga hari dan masa panen 95 hari. Famili S1 jagung putih mempunyai karakter masa keluarnya malai 42-49 hari, tinggi tanaman 1,5-1,9 m serta bertongkol lebih satu
