Technique of hypophysation of some freshwater fishes

The technique of hypophysation has been done to propagate seven species of freshwater fishes e.g. common carp (Cyprinus carpio), tawes (Puntius gonionotus), nilem (Osteochilus hasselti), jelawat (Hypopthalmichthys molitrix) and jambal siam (Pangasius sutchi). The first three species can spawn by traditional methods. The use of pituitary treatment for the species is aimed to ensure and accelerate the spawning and to obtain the eggs for control hatching. Jelawat is the native species of open waters of Sumatera and Kalimantan for the first time can spawn by the technique in 1978. The last three above mentioned fishes are introduced ones. Silver carp and grass carp were first breed by hypophysation at Cibalagung in 1971 and 1973 respectively. Larva of jambal siam can be obtained by the method in 1971. The technique of pituitary treatment of each species is discussed.
