The National Agricultural Library (NAL) is responsible for input to the AGRIS database from the United States. The same records that are submitted to AGRIS also comprise a large subset of AGRICOLA, NAL's own database. When these two organizations implemented two different thesauri, with markedly different levels of specificity, in 1985 and 1986, already-existing compatibility problems between Agricola and Agris indexing records were exacerbated. To address this problem, NAL and AGRIS undertook a joint project to build a conversion table that could be used in computer-assisted translation of the CAB Thesaurus descriptors in AGRICOLA records to the AGROVOC descriptors required for AGRIS records. This paper describes the conversion project, categorizes and gives examples of issues encountered in reconciling descriptors from the two thesauri, and discusses several beneficial results of the project
