Physical and anatomical properties of beech (Fagus sp.) wood
1990
Paraskevopoulou, A. (Ministry of Agriculture, Athens (Greece). Forest Research Inst.)
The wood anatomy of beech wood (Fagus sp.) from two natural stands of Ossa mountain was examined and the within-tree variation (radially and vertically) of the wood basic density and fiber length was studied. Anatomical elements of mature wood measured were fiber dimensions vessel member dimensions and frequency, proportion ("percent") of vessels, fibers and parenchyma. Comparison of the studied beech wood properties and structural features from Ossa mountain and other places in Europe has shown that beech wood in Greece presents higher wood density, fiber dimensions, vessels dimensions and proportion ("percent") of fibers and lower vessel frequency and proportion ("percent") of vessels and parenchyma.
