The Australian Merino selection programmes for improved wool production [sheep]. [Workshop paper]
1988
Shepherd, R.A. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Perth. Rangeland Management Branch)
The Merino wool fleece is partially determined by genetical components and selction procedures can be adopted that favour those genes that increase wool production. High wool performance rams can be bred using an 'elite' breeding flock and using a scientific selection programme. Rams are the most important key to improving wool production in the flock and so careful consideration is required when selecting which animals to purchase. Information should be sought on the stud history and management and the individual ram performance levels before any selection decisions are made. Fleece weighing of flocks is profitable provided that reasonable culling levels can be achieved. Fleece weighing and the culling of low cutters in the ewes flocks will provide genetical gains in wool production.
