The effect of phosphorus as fertiliser or supplement on pasture and cattle productivity in the semi-arid tropics of north Queensland

Superphosphate was applied to pastures of Urochloa mosambicensis (Sabi grass), Stylosanthes hamata cv. Verano and S. scabra cv. Seca in northern Queensland. Sabi grass became the dominant species in all fertilized pastures, whereas unfertilized pasture became progressively more stylo-dominant during the first 7 years, but subsequently there was an increase in Sabi grass. Liveweight gain responses to fertilizer were large (60-80 kg per heifer per annum) in the early years, irrespective of the amount of applied P. Plasma inorganic P level during the autumn was the most reliable indicator of P deficiency.
