1988
Francis, M.P. | Pankhurst, N.W. (Auckland Univ. (New Zealand). Leigh Marine Lab.)
Gonads from age classes 0+ to 10+ years were examined histologically. All 0+ fish were undifferentiated, and all 1+ fish were immature females. From 2+ to 4+, the gonads were ovary, ovo-testis or testis. Older fish were either male or female. Snapper reach maturity between 2 and 5 years, so the pattern is juvenile sex inversion by some of the population, and functional gonochorism.
