Self-mulching behaviour in clay soils - its definition and measurement [review]
1991

The history of the self-mulching concept is reviewed and from this a definition is proposed. To introduce a quantitative emphasis, a numerical index is developed that relies on a comparison of the clay released by puddling with the clay released by shaking after drying and slaking of the puddle. Suitable parameters were extracted from experiments using typical Australian self-mulching soils. The numerical index values were compared with field structure ratings made by pedologists for 47 soils from Australia and elsewhere, and good agreement was found.
