Kendall, K. (Concord Animal Hosp., New South Wales (Australia)) | Collins, G.H. | Pope, S.E. (Sydney Univ., Camden (Australia). Dept. of Veterinary Pathology)
Post mortem examination of 200 feral cats for adult D. immitis and 101 of these cats for heartworm antigens by an ELISA, showed only 2 cats had adult heartworms, and the blood sample of another cat contained a single microfilaria. The blood of a further 3 cats contained small amounts of D. immitis antigen. Although D. immitis occurs in cats in Sydney, the prevalence is not high enough to warrant prophylactic treatment.
