Insulin secretion in lactating ewes was suppressed by infusion of somatostatin, and then insulin administered in doses increased stepwise, while glucose levels in plasma were kept almost constant by frequent monitoring and intravenous administration. Under these conditions, increasing insulin increased glucose uptake by muscle, and decreased it in the mammary gland.
