A pathotyping test based on the polymerase chain reaction for H7 avian influenza viruses is described to detect differences in nucleotide sequences corresponding to the HA cleavage site. The test may be used predictively to assess the pathogenic potential of viruses isolated from wild birds, and may also provide a mechanism for the differentiation of similar viruses isolated at the same time during a single outbreak, as was the case in Australia in 1976.
