Samples of serum from 40 bacon-weight pigs from each of 106 herds were tested in ELISA against the lipopolysaccharide of Treponema hyodysenteriae serogroups A, B, and E. Some herds were resampled and retested, and faecal samples from some were cultured for the spirochaete. A third of all herds scored positive on one testing. The ELISA was estimated to have a sensitivity of close to 80 percent. Prevalence within herds averaged 18 percent.
