Nine ostriches requiring various surgical and radiological procedures were anaesthetised using xylazine premedication followed by alphaxalone- alphadolone and isoflurane. While the combination of drugs used seemed to offer many worthwhile advantages, a low heart rate in the early stages of anaesthesia was a constant feature and apnoea and regurgitation were complications that developed in some birds
