Direct drilling with 2 implements and 3 herbicide treatments was compared with conventional seedbed preparation and aerial sowing. Seedling density of the grasses declined in almost linear fashion from maximum emergence to established density at 250 days. Results from treatments indicate that competition from the resident sward is intense and may occur early in seedling development; promotion of rapid early growth is the key factor in gaining strong establishment.
