The Upper Condamine Irrigation Area, spanning a distance of 75 km along the Condamine River from Tummaville to Macalister, encompasses 10.5 percent of the State's irrigation area. Within the study area, irrigated cropping area during the period from 1978-79 to 1989-90 increased by 43 percent. This expansion relied heavily on groundwater sources which have been decreasing rapidly. The continuing groundwater problem raises the question of how important water is to the Upper Condamine Irrigation Area. A financial and limited agronomic survey of both irrigation and dryland farms was undertaken to establish the economic benefits of irrigation. The objectives of the study were: to provide physical, management and economic data so that the economic and technical performance of irrigation and non-irrigation farmers in the Condamine River Basin can be compared; to develop measures for assessing the relative productivity of irrigation and dryland farming; and to assess the contribution of irrigation farming to the regional economy.
