Response of carrots (Daucus carota L.) to applied phosphorus and phosphorus leaching on a Karrakatta sand, under two irrigation regimes

On a previously uncropped site on the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia, carrots required phosphorus at the rate of 157 kg per ha for maximum economic yield; the P concentration of youngest mature leaves under those conditions was 0.38 percent. Visual symptoms of P deficiency were noticeable only in severe cases. Only at the highest P application rate was there any evidence of leaching of P below 30 cm. Irrigation frequency did not significantly affect responses to P or the leaching losses of P.
