From 34 to 42 tropical and subtropical legumes were screened for their ability to persist under heavy grazing at 9 sites. They were sown into cultivated strips in existing grassland, which grew back into the strips. Of commercial species, the most successful were Aeschynomene falcata cv. Bargoo, Trifolium semipilosum cv. Safari, Arachis pintoi cv. Amarillo and, in more open swards, Lotononis bainesii cv. Miles. Some further species did well at one or two sites. Of non-commercial species, Zornia curvata showed promise. White clover was successful in the most southerly sites.
