An improved model for monocultures, using the non-rectangular hyperola for the rate of single-leaf photosynthesis and incorporating the Monsi-Saeki approach for light interception in the canopy, is presented, and extended to describe photosynthesis in mixed-species canopies. It is shown to be a good representation of grazed temperate grass-clover swards and of frequently-cut tropical ones.
