Soil conservation programmes are best planned on a catchment basis rather than for individual landholders. The Gindie area, near Emerald in Central Queensland, was selected as a project area where farm plans were prepared for several adjoining properties. All landholders in the district were encouraged to participate in the scheme. Resulting from this involvement was increased numbers of landholders undertaking soil conservation work; increased commitment to implementation of the plan due to direct involvement in all stages of planning process; and resolution of runoff coordination problems between affected landusers. The success of The Gindi project has led to the establishment of 4 large scale group schemes and a number of smaller schemes in various localities on the Central Highlands.
