A land resources survey of the Plane Creek region near Sarina, assessed some 161 650 ha for its suitability for sugar-cane production. Some 50 000 ha were considered suitable for cane production, with some two-thirds of suitable land occurring in Sarina Shire and one-third in Broadsound Shire. The total gross assignment for the Plane Creek mill is approximately 15 000 ha, indicating there are significant areas of land available for any future expansion of the sugar industry in the Plane Creek region. Soil erosion and salting occur in the production areas but their effects can be minimised by the adoption of appropriate land management practices.
