As water stress developed, the rate of node appearance on this twining perennial legume was decreased. The most pronounced positive effect of water stress on flowering occurred in the first 4 weeks of the first drying cycle, when under mild stress conditions shoot density was unimpaired and the higher ratio of floral to vegetative buds, and their enhanced survival, led to increased inflorescence and flower density.
