Study tour to USA, France and Poland - lupin breeding, genetics and diseases - June 25-August 3, 1988
1989
Cowling, W.A. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Perth. Crop Improvement Branch)
The tour investigates the use of recurrent selection to improve disease resistance and yield in self-pollinating crops; compares plant breeding programmes in USA and Europe with those in Australia; investigates the likely impact of Plant Variety Rights or Patent legislation on plant breeding in Australia; and investigates the use of tissue culture in lupins and other crops as a breeding technique or for the application of recombinant DNA technology. It investigates the potential of interspecific crossing for introducing genes into lupins from related or alien species; examines genebanks for soybean and other crops as a guide to development of the Australian lupin collection; and to improve lupin genetic resources through international co-operation. It compares and contrasts Phomopsis-Diaporthe diseases of soybean and lupins, as a guide to improving resistance to Phomopsis stem blight in lupins; and investigates lupin diseases and pests in the northern hemisphere, and progress in breeding for disease resistance.
