The Mallee legume book [Victoria]
1989
Rainbow, R. (Victorian Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Walpeup (Australia). Mallee Research Station) (ed.)
In traditional rotations in the Mallee, up to one third of the farm is dedicated to non-productive fallow for 10 months of the year, resulting in a wheat yield and quality which is no better than crops produced after a weed-free legume phase of the rotation. There must be a significant change in farming practices in order to remain competitive. Fallowing is not necessary to release N as long as weeds and plant diseases are controlled. Agronomy, pest and disease control, and recommended varieties are given for chickpeas, lupins, field peas, annual medic, lucerne, and vetch.
