Effect of seed weight and seed phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations on the early growth of wheat seedlings

In one experiment, seeds with 3 levels of P were sown in soils with a range of available P; seedling emergence was more rapid the higher the seed-P, and after 25 days the low seed-P seedlings had made up the difference only at the highest soil-P and seed weight. Seedlings from high seed-P had larger first leaves, higher dry weight and longer roots when grown in P-deficient culture. Heavier seeds had the same advantage over lighter, but this was largely accounted for by their higher total seed-P. No effect of seed-N was observed.
