Parfitt, R.L. (Dept. of Scientific and Industrial Research, Lower Hutt (New Zealand). Div. of Land and Soil Sciences)
Studies are reviewed and a definition of the allophane group of minerals is suggested. Three types of allophane are identified and their structures are discussed: Al-rich allophanes, Si-rich allophanes; and stream deposit allophanes. Examples from NZ soils and tephras are discussed in relation to properties, identification and weathering processes.
