Wool sulfur concentration and output in fleece-weight selected and control Romney lambs [potential index for selection]

Midside wool samples were collected at 28-day intervals from 4 to 14 months of age from 35 fleece-weight selected and 30 control rams. Selected rams had significantly greater wool growth; average wool S concentration in both lines increased over the sampling period to a peak at day 308. The wool S concentration of selected rams was significantly below that of controls only on 2 sampling days. Total S output was significantly higher in the selected rams on days 84-140 and days 196-308. It is concluded that S concentrations and output are unlikely to be useful genetic markers for high fleece weight.
