In laboratory and greenhouse trials, balansa and subterranean clovers had similar salt tolerance at germination and seedling emergence, but balansa clover suffered from poor seedling vigour regardless of salinity conditions. Established plants of balansa clover were significantly more tolerant of salt and had a greater survival rate at very high salinities than subterranean clover plants; chloride levels in plant tissue was lower at high salinities in balansa clover.
