Correlations of Fe and Al extracted by 3 procedures from 36 surface soils suggest that the Al released is largely associated with organic matter while only a small fraction of the Fe is in this form. pH appeared to be the most significant factor in determining the level of ferrihydrite and iron-organic matter complexes. The data suggest that pyrophosphate extractable Fe is a useful indicator of the most active, mobile component of Fe in surface soils.
