Reducing phosphorus leaching from sandy soils with red mud bauxite processing residues [Western Australia]

Using field lysimeters, addition of 500 t per ha red mud neutralized with gypsum or 200 t per ha red mud neutralized with copperas was found to reduce the leaching of P to below 3 kg per ha for application rates of 270 and 80 kg P per ha, respectively, to a very sandy Swan Coastal Plain soil. Water retention was increased by 14 and 50 percent by the addition of 200 and 2000 t per ha red mud, respectively. High total soluble salt levels associated with high levels of residue application may affect pasture production in the years immediately following soil amendment.
