The results of the studies conducted for seven months on the type and amount of food taken by the silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) and its diel patterns of feeding are presented. The fish was mainly a phytoplankton feeder. The important food groups recorded in the stomach of the fish were Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Debris and others. The animal foods were taken by the fish incidentally in a very negligible amount. The fish was found to be a continuous feeder with diurnal feeding habit. It showed only one feeding peak at noon (1200 hour). The maximum feeding activity of the fish was recorded at day time at night.
