Cycles of drought in Bangladesh: causes and recommendations

Drought is an annually problem not only for sustaining routine crops but also serial crops like Boro, IRRI and other vegetables. The Agriculture Department should seek possible means on the largest scale for an overall improvement in farming through the needed expansion of agriculture facilities. Water reservoirs built on a large scale and digging of canal, beels, haors and excavation in canal under and national plan could be one of the answers to drought and dry season. However, to avoid drought, we can reduce dependency on our agriculture sector, as these natural calamities affect very much our crops and others. One of the alternative ways to make our economy sound lies in making moves towards industrialization. Above all, we may try to make artificial rains in our country as is attempted in the USA, Japan and Thailand which have achieved a great success in combating drought. Besides, the government should formulate a national policy on drought to face such a disastrous monster.
