A laboratory study was carried out to enumerate the cyanobacterial population and flora of moist and dried soil samples from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Farm, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur Farm and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) Seed Multiplication Farm, Madhupur. The population of cyanobacteria at 0-15 cm depth in BAU Farm, Jamalpur Farm and Madhupur Farm were 4.54 x 10(5), 0.78 x 10(5) and 0.07 x 10(5) per gm soil, respectively. The population was higher in top 0-0.5 cm depth in all soils studied and decreased sharply with increasing depth. Ten genera of cyanobacteria were observed in BAU Farm, eight in Jamalpur Farm and seven in Madhupur Farm. Air-drying of soil samples and subsequent storage for a period of two months reduced the population size and floral diversity of cyanobacteria.
