Chile is the subcenter of origin for several cultivated crops, among which stands out the potato (Solanum tuberosum spp, tuberosum); madi (Media sativa); Bromus mango (extinct); Fragaria chiloensis, and moreover, though not being the principal center for these, it does possess native varieties of Zea mays, Amaranthus sp., Chenopodium quinoa, Phaseolus lunatus, Capsicum sp, and others, which are cultivated by the remaining of aboriginal population. Collections have been gathered by several Chilean institutions however Universidad Austral de Chile is the one which has shown the greatest efforts in the gathering, maintenance, and evaluation of native plant material in the country. Priority has been given in particular to the Solanaceae Family, especially the native cultivated potato and its wild relatives. The evaluation includes studies covering genetic, morphological, agronomic, physiological and phytosanitary factors. The data obtained by evaluation are processed by computer analysis. The issue on potato germplasm is oriented principally to obtain new lines which may better respond to marginal conditions of agriculture, allowing small farmers to use them
