Most animal species used in Suriname today are exotics, being either traditionally domesticated or introduced species. Settlement of the alien species in the Surinamese ecosystems will most likely lead to a lot of ecological problems. This situation is unfortunate because many of the local species have promising potentials if used in a sustainable way. A listing of these species (or groups) is made. More research into the sustainable exploitation of local wildlife is necessary, as well as strenghtening of the controlling agencies , the Suriname Forest Service of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries
