Program highlights and results in 1985/86 are reported. The topics highlighted give an insight into the continuing work of the program scientists and the progress they have already made. The tropics covered are on barley/livestock farming systems research, Soils Directorate/ICARDA barley trials in north Syria, on-station rotation trials with barley and forage legumes, on-farm rotation trials with barley and forage legumes; wheat based systems research, economics of wheat production in north west Syria, nitrogen, phosphate and herbicide effects on farmers' wheat production, productivity of wheat-based rotations at Tel Hadya, Syria, labelled urea fertilizer experiments on wheat, food legume on-farm trials; intersystems research, spatial climate modeling objectives and methods, agricultural labor and technological change, aspects of agricultural labor in north west Syria, increasing fertilizer use efficiency through soil test calibration, impact and potential of water management within rainfed areas; and training and agrotechnology transfer.
