The immediate effect of mutagenesis was studied in a land variety of lentil (L-3991). The mutagenic treatments caused significant biological damage which was measured by M1 parameters. However, the pattern of mutagenic damage varied with different mutagens. Gamma rays had more drastic effect on fertility and seedling height, Ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) on fertility, Nitroso ethyl urea (NEU) on germination, and survival and minimum toxicity was recorded with sodium azide (SA)
