Mutagenic sensitivity of gamma rays and ethyl methane sulfonate in Lathyrus sativus L.

Mutagenic sensitivity of gamma rays and ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) to P27, an improved cultivar of Lathyrus sativus L., was assessed in M1 generation. The effects of the mutagen on a number of M1 parameters such as germination, seedling injury, plant survival, pollen and seed sterility, leaf aberrations and chlorophyll chimeras were studied. In general, gamma rays exhibited more mutagenic sensitivity than EMS. Mutagenic treatments did not affect the germination percentage significantly but showed a direct dose-dependent relation with more pronounced and correlated effect on shoot and root growth, plant survival, and pollen and seed sterility. EMS treatments produced higher chimeric frequency than that of gamma-ray treatments. Induction of fibrous roots, a unique characteristic of monocots, was observed with lower doses of gamma rays (5, 10 and 15 kR), while higher mutagenic doses proved to be more lethal, which may be due to multiple lethal hits
