Performance of determinate faba beans in Ethiopia
1997
Berhe, A. (Mekele Research Center (Ethiopia))
To determine the yield potential of determinate faba beans (Vicia faba L.) in Ethiopia, a number of varieties were tested at mid-altitude locations: Denbi (1900 m asl), Kulumsa (2200 m), and Asasa (2300 m). The entries were grown in a randomized complete block design with two replications for a preliminary yield trial and three replications for a pre-national variety trial. In most cases, indeterminate varieties outyielded determinates at Denbi. The highest-yielding determinate lines at Denbi were S82238-86-1-1 (2175 kg per ha) in 1991, D84211-4-1-1-1 (4070 kg per ha) in 1992, FLIP 86-115-2 (2294 kg per ha) in 1993, S82231-31-6-1-1 (1990 kg per ha) in 1994, and D31008-15-1-1-1 (1209 kg perha) in 1995. At Kulumsa and Asasa, lines D87101-1-1-1-1 (2097 kg per ha) and D3104-3-1 (2141 kg per ha), respectively, did well. Although determinate varieties have high potential in high-rainfall areas of high fertility, they are generally low yielders compared with the local traditional or indeterminate plant types
