Long-term fertility effects on wheat productivity

Long-term fertilizer experiments established in India during 1970-71 indicated a declining trend in wheat productivity over the years even under balanced application of NPK chemical fertilizers in multiple cropping systems. The deterioration in productivity was found to be associated with the emergence of deficiencies of secondary nutrients like sulfur and micronutrients like zinc. The normal recommended doses of NPK fertilizers for wheat were found to be suboptimal when applied to multiple cropping systems involving rice or maize, thereby suggesting that the fertilizer recommendations should be developed on a cropping systems basis for realizing greater wheat productivity. The integrated use of organic manures and chemical NPK fertilizers was found to be quite promising, not only in providing greater stability in production, but also in maintaining higher soil fertility status
