Triticale and spring wheat were compared based on the 1987/89 Spanish National Variety Trials. Spring wheat outyielded triticale in most trials; however, the site x species interaction was significant. Independent analyses for each species, using 68 trials, revealed that the magnitude of the genotype x environment (GxE) interaction was similar for both species. The Finlay and Wilkinson analysis seemed to explain the GxE interaction in wheat more adequately than in triticale, but it never explained more than 25 percent of it. The percentage of variability explained by the first AMMI axis was always much higher in triticale (up to 72 percent) than in wheat, suggesting that the interaction is much more site-specific in triticale than in spring wheat. Behavior of complete and substituted types was different in all trials
