Renewable energy for a low-carbon pathway in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Current status, potential, and challenges

This paper presents targets pertaining to renewable energy as put forward by the HKH countries, and the potential of the HKH region to contribute to the national climate targets related to renewable energy. We provide an overview of the energy scenario, including the electricity consumption, production, and imports in different countries of the HKH. Net zero policies and other energy-related targets are also discussed. We analyse the renewable energy potential in the region and provide some recommendations for greater financial support, customised policies, capacity building, the generation of data, and the promotion of renewable energy technologies. The information presented in this paper has been compiled and synthesised from various climate-related national documents such as the NDCs and national-level climate change policies, strategies, and action plans formulated by the countries of the HKH.
