Ureaplasmosis and mycoplasmosis in Texas range goats

Spanish goats (meat type) and Angora goats (mohair type) are the predomint breeds of range goats in Texas. A conservative estimate of the number of goats in Texas for 1980 is 1 380 000 consisting of 330 000 Spanih goats and 1 050 000 Angora goats. Most of these goats are maintained under range conditions and usually are gathered only four or five times a year. Ureaplasmas and mycoplasmas can be isolated from most of the flocks in Texas. The more frequently isolated species are Ureaplasma sp., Mycoplasma conjuctivae, M. ovipneumoniae and M. arginini. Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides (LC type) has been identified at least once in Texas goats. M. putrefaciens, Acholeplasma oculi, and M. capriocolum have not been isolated
