A digestibility and metabolism trial was conducted to assess the effect of replacing maize with hand-expressed sunflower cake on the apparent digestibility of the nutrients, the nitrogen retention and concentration of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the serum. There was a non-significant decline in feed intake and an improvement in the feed conversion ratio as the proportion of sunflower cake in the diet increased from 8 to 42 per cent. The digestibility of dry matter decreased as the amount of dietary sunflower cake increased. Nitrogen retention was not statistically different among dietary treatments, although animals in treatment 4 retained the highest amoont of nitrogen. All animals were in positive nitrogen balance. The article gives a detailed account of the experiments
