The nutritive value of Acacia karoo, Acacia nilotica, Securinega virosa and Ziziphus mucronata was investigated by laboratory analysis, the nylon bag technique and by a feeding trial. The browse species contained high N (19, 25, 34 and 26 g/kg DM, respectively) and low fibre (337, 314, 305 and 336 g NDF/kg DM, respectively). Browse intake was unrelated to tannin content or hay intake. Digestibility of browse/hay mix was significantly and negatively related to vanillin-HCI tannins or the butanol-HCI tannins
