The small Mascaren oceanic islands (of which Mauritius is part) present special challenges to the conservation of bio-diversity because they are characterised by endemism, extensive habitat degradation and high rates of species extinction. The diverse climatic, geological and topographical regimes have favoured the evolution of diverse plant species with high degree of endemism. The Tree Seed Centre is part of the forestry service and both have a big role to play in the conservation of the unique vegetation types characteristic of these beautiful islands. Tree Seed Centre in Mauritius is still very new and not yet operational. It has a potential to contribute significantly to the supply of forest tree seeds and to sustainable management and conservation of forest resources in the country. A number of activities are being followed to archieve the goal of providing seed of high genetic and physiological quality. The forestry Department promotes conservation of natural vegetation and native forest ecosystems through the stablishment of Conservation Management Areas (CMA)
