Abbot, P. G. | Piearce, G. D. | Gumbo, D. J.
The University of Aberdeen and the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) are collaborating on a British Overseas Development Administration funded research project entitled "Management of Miombo as Community Woodlots". A large Component of the research will be dedicated to establishing silvicultural methodoligies which are applicable to and within the capability of the rural forest users. Silvicultural trials will involve studying different cutting systems, grazing regimes, species selection, regeneration and enrichment planting techniques, and simple soil and water conservation techniques. Cutting trials based on coppice rotation systems have been adopted. Some of the preliminary research results provide information on forest structure, volume and resource use. The project started in the field in April 1992, with the first phase running for three years. The results and analyses will be used to help develop an effective strategy for community management of miombo woodland in Malawi.
