Population growth pressure and environmental degradation in Zimbabwe's communal lands: trends and implications for common property resource management
1998
Mudimu, G.
The paper is an exploratory analysis of trends in population growth and its impact on commony property resources use and management in the communal lands of Zimbabwe. The exploratory analysis, based on secondary data, suggests that increase in human population and the associated increase in livestock population have exerted pressure on common property resources, namely cropland, wood and grazing land ressources. Overgrazing, soil erosion and deforestation attributable to past and current landuse are a threat to sustainability of the land resources on which arable agriculture is dependent.
