A taxonomic survey and documentation of fish species belonging to the families Serranidae and Labridae in the Syrian marine water

The aim of this research was to determine the fish species belonging to the families Serranidae and Labridae in the Syrian marine waters, and also to preserve one sample at least of each species to be a model, confirming the changes of Fish Fauna in the future, in addition to get experience in Fish Taxonomy in order to comprehension of Marine Biodiversity. The research was carried out in the Laboratory of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture (Tishreen University), during the period from 21/12/2021 to 30/12/2022. Fish samples were collected from fishermen in landing areas along the Syrian coast, caught from different depths, using various methods. 60 individuals were captured and studied during the research period. During this study, it was found that the Syrian waters include 9 species belonging to Serranidae family, one of them is confirmed its occerence in the Syrian marine water (Epinephelus areolatus), and 5 species belonging to Labridae family one of them is recorded for the first time from the Levanten (Symphodus bailloni), as the species were distributed as follows: Serranidae: Epinephelus aeneus, Epinephelus areolatus, Epinephelus caninus, Epinephelus costae, Epinephelus marginatus, Mycteroperca rubra, Serranus cabrilla, Serranus hepatus, and Serranus scriba. Labridae: Coris julis, Symphodus tinca, Symphodus bailloni , Thalassoma pavo, and Xyrichhtys novacula.
