Organization and coding capacity of mitochondrial genomes of algae

The complete sequencing of the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mitochondrial genome by different groups of investigators and the recent report of the genetic map from the unicellular alga Prototheca wickerhamii (1) allows for the first time the comparison of the coding capacity of these algal mtDNAs with one another and with those from eukaryotes of unrelated taxa. Here we present a concise compilation of selected molecular data from the mitochondria of both algae. The construction of a phylogenetic tree using sequence data from various eukaryotes indicates a rather close relationship of P. wickerhamii mitochondria to those from the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha and other embryophytes. In contrast, the C. reinhardtii mitochondria branch with unrelated taxa, thus suggesting a polyphyletic origin of algal mitochondria.Show more [+] Less [-]
