Researchers have long suspected an association between coffee drinking and cardiovascular disease, in particular coronary heart disease. This issue focuses on the current research findings implicating caffeine consumption as a potential risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), with emphasis on three major CHD risks: cholesterol and lipids, hypertension and arrythmogenicity. Some additional concerns about caffeine's safety are briefly addressed.
